About My Job Shadow
What is ‘My Job Shadow’ and why should I care?

The Los Gatos High School Job Shadow Program was developed to help Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors each explore career possibilities by matching them with businesses, government agencies and individuals. Some big-name Silicon Valley companies have already committed and we are fortunate to be in such reasonable proximity.

There are many small and medium businesses, agencies and individuals involved, including Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, Van Meter Elementary School and the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department. There are marketing and high tech companies, photographers, reporters and environmental companies signed up. Some firms are sponsoring only 1 student, while others will host 10 – 30 students for 3 – 5 hours during our Job Shadow Day.

Details and FAQs

The Job Shadow day takes place on After COVID restrictions. Typically students will meet at the location of the host company and will spend approximately 3 – 5 hours with their host. They will be introduced to the business, provided overviews of the organization, meet with employees and learn what it takes to have a career in their line of work. Many companies will provide tours, lunch, and meetings with staff members of their organization. Remember, this is a professional company, who has taken time out of the schedule to meet with our students – please dress appropriately and act professional.

How do I register?

You must register, obtain your parents permission, and complete all contact information, including medical contacts in case of an emergency. Some businesses will require additional documentation prior to offering a visit to their company. You must register BEFORE you will be allowed to participate in the Job Shadow Day.

How do I select the Job Shadow I would like to attend?

Please review the companies and opportunities that are posted on this site. We are adding more each day, though there are limited spaces available at most companies. You will be asked to select your top 3 choices, as well as your “ideal company” that you wish to visit. We will do our best to match a desired company with you. In the event that all spots are taken, we will substitute a company of position that best fits your choices.

What if I change my mind about the company I chose to visit?

Don’t worry. We plan to hold Job Shadow days continually. This may be your first chance to meet with people working in a field you like. You may discover that it is beyond your wildest dreams, or that it is not quite what you had imagined. You will get more chances for additional Job Shadow days being set up.

How do I get to the Host company?

If you are not able to drive, we will do our best to help you find a carpool. If not, ask your parents. We will let you know of other students who may be visiting the same location. You are strongly encouraged to show up 5 – 10 minutes early, as some tours will be leaving very quickly once the start time begins.

Is lunch provided?

Some companies are graciously providing lunch, while others encourage you to bring a bag lunch with you. Please check the job posting for more details on each specific opportunity.

Can I share information on my questions, or if I had a great/terrible time at a company?

Yes, by all means please do. We have added social media links to all job shadow postings. Please post questions, comments, photos and videos. You can comment on any post, and add your own questions. Other students want to know about your experience, what you liked and didn’t like. What did you learn, would you go there again? Please share things that you feel would benefit other students. And be sure to upload photos of your group shot during your Job Shadow Host visit.
